Discharge Instructions for Dilation and Curettage (D and C)

Choose a preferred language

You had a dilation and curettage (D&C). The reasons for having this procedure vary. It may be done to control heavy uterine bleeding or to find the cause of irregular bleeding. It may also be done to remove pregnancy tissue after an abortion or miscarriage.

Home care

  • Take it easy. Rest for 2 days as needed.
  • Go back to your normal activities after 24 to 48 hours. You may also return to work at that time.
  • Eat a normal diet.
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed.
  • It's OK to have bleeding for about a week after the D&C. The amount of bleeding should be similar to what you have during a normal period.
  • Don't drive for 24 hours after the D&C unless your doctor says it's okay.
  • Don't have sex or use tampons or douches until your doctor says it's safe.

Follow-up

  • Make a follow-up appointment, or as advised.

When to contact your doctor

Contact your doctor right away if you have any of these:

  • Bleeding that soaks more than 1 sanitary pad in 1 hour
  • Severe belly pain
  • Severe cramps
  • Fever of 100.4°F ( 38°C) or higher, or as directed by your doctor
  • A bad-smelling vaginal discharge
